13.10.14 Shared reading programme extended to 4-8 year olds. The Deaf Education Centre is delighted to announce that they have received a generous grant from The Ireland Funds to extend their Shared Reading Programme to 8 year olds. 6.10.14 Flashing light app for smart phones. A new smart phone app from Convo, allows users to create personalised ring tones of light to identify incoming callers, and adjust the brightness in a room to make sign language easier to see onscreen. For more information »

8.9.14 Bogus street collectors. The last known sighting of these collectors was in Cork and Galway. The IDS has issued a statement confirming they have no street collections anywhere in Ireland. If you are not sure if a collection is legitimate or not, contact the organisation concerned. If it is a bogus collection, they in turn can contact the Gardaí. For more information »

1.9.14 Petition to save Hands On. Hands On, the TV programme for the Deaf community in Ireland was cut and will not be re-commissioned this year. The Irish Deaf Society (IDS) is calling on members of the Deaf and hearing community to sign a petition calling on RTÉ to reinstate HANDS ON - the only TV programme for the Deaf and hard of hearing in Ireland. We are asking you to please contact your local Fine Gael (FG) and Labour TD's this week to stress to Minister Phil Hogan the important service that Deaforward provided to the Deaf community and to reinstate the service's funding. 7.7.14 Irish Deaf Society National advocacy service scrapped by the government. The IDS's Advocacy Service worked to provide access for Deaf people to public services, education, healthcare and the means to employment. The service's closure puts the Deaf community at further risk of social and economic isolation and a decline in living standards. For more information »

13.1.14 Sign language interpreted programmes on RTÉ. Since October 2013, RTÉ have been providing three hours of Irish made programmes through Irish Sign Language every Wednesday night.
