Adult Learning Support

Kerry Deaf Adult Learning Programme

» Project Summary & Aims:
This project aims to address the severe gaps in the provision of education and training opportunities for Deaf Irish Sign Language users in Kerry by capacity building 14 Deaf Adults to actively participate in local educational provision.

» To do this the Project will:
Deliver a 3 year accredited programme to 14 deaf adults, this modular programme is based on the British model developed by the Council for the Advancement of Communication with Deaf People (CACDP ) which is being used as a blueprint, as there are currently no accredited body for this type of programme in the Republic of Ireland.

After the above training is completed the participants will be trained to become accredited Deaf Adult Tutors and provide the Programme to other local Deaf people and their families, statutory and non-statutory organisations.

It is hoped that this project will work to empower Deaf adults to participate and influence policy development in the area of education, teaching methodologies, appropriate resource materials and accreditation as a right through the medium of Irish Sign Language (ISL)

It will also work to develop and highlight this as an innovative approach and model of good practice for mainstreaming learning and addressing educational inequality for Deaf people in Kerry.

» Practice and policy aspect:
The Project will develop a model of good practice that can be adapted by other Deaf projects in Ireland and accredited nationally.

It will also work to ensure that educational programmes are equality proofed, thus ensuring participation of those at risk of social exclusion, in this case, Deaf Irish Sign Language users.

The Kerry Deaf Adult Learning Programme is funded and supported by the Department of Education and Science with Leargas. The Kerry Deaf Resource Centre and the Kerry Education Service jointly manage the programme. The website details are:
